The Transcarpathian police served a notice of suspicion to the fugitives who tried to cross the border under the guise of an international humanitarian organization. Reportedly, a group of conscripts, aged 20 to 40, tried to illegally cross the state border of Ukraine. Two residents of Kyiv, another from Kyiv region, a resident of Kherson and a resident of Donetsk used forged documents that allegedly showed their involvement with the international humanitarian organization Red Cross.
In addition to the documents, the men also used the uniforms of the organization's volunteers to make their case.
They were driving a Mercedes to a checkpoint on the border with Romania. During the inspection, Ukrainian border guards exposed them.
All five offenders were served notices of suspicion of committing offenses under Part 5 of Article 27, Part 1 of Article 358, Part 4 of Article 358 (use of a knowingly forged document) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and Article 445 (illegal use of Red Cross symbols, except as provided for by this Code) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
As of today, the pre-trial investigation in the case has been completed, and the criminal proceedings have been sent to court for consideration on the merits. The defendants face a fine and up to two years' imprisonment.
