The draft law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence", which was adopted in the first reading by the Georgian parliament, contradicts the basic norms and values of the EU. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varghese and the EU High Representative Josep Borrell, UNN reports.
Details
Borrel on his page in X stated that the law on "transparency of foreign influence" could restrict the work of the media and freedom of speech in Georgia.
We call on the leaders to refrain from adopting laws that could compromise Georgia's path to the EU
Also, the EU High Representative and Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varghese called on the Georgian government to refrain from adopting a "law on foreign agents."
According to him, Georgia has an active civil society, which contributes to the country's successful progress on the path to EU membership.
The proposed law would limit the ability of civil society and the media to operate freely, could restrict freedom of expression and unfairly stigmatize organizations that benefit Georgian citizens. The EU calls on Georgia to refrain from adopting legislation that could compromise Georgia's path to the EU, a path that is supported by the vast majority of Georgian citizens
