Not only in Ukraine, but also in other countries, specialists often have to deal with kidney transplantation. Oleksandr Ostapyshen, a surgeon and transplantologist at the Shalimov National Research Center for Surgery and Transplantation, told this on YouTube Health Live, UNN reports.

Details

Answering the hosts' questions, the doctor told what organs can be transplanted from one person to another.

You can transplant the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, intestines, pancreas. The cornea can also be transplanted. In recent years, the limbs of the arm, leg, and even the face have been transplanted. There are also cases of uterine transplantation, and then the patient carried a child

he said.

According to Ostapyshen, the most common type of transplantation is a kidney transplant.

A lot of kidneys are transplanted, probably even more than half of all organs that are transplanted are kidneys

- the doctor noted.

According to him, the reason is that kidney disease, such as kidney failure, is quite common. It is also because the kidneys are paired organs and this increases the possibility of transplantation from a living donor, in particular, a relative. In addition, the transplantologist added that with proper therapy, a patient with kidney disease can live quite a long time and wait for a donor organ, while patients who need a heart transplant, for example, cannot wait long.

He also said that, compared to other transplants, facial transplants are difficult when it is necessary to restore facial muscles or blood supply. Limb transplantation is also difficult, as it requires restoration of motor activity. Among the internal organs, lung transplantation is one of the most difficult, both in terms of the operation itself and the rehabilitation period.

The risks of rejection or complications are much higher because the lungs are in direct contact with the external environment, i.e. air, and infection. And these are complex transplants

- He explained.

Recall

As of October, Ukrainian doctors have performed 373 organ transplants this year. The operations were performed in 26 centers. 250 kidneys, 73 livers, and 50 hearts were transplanted, with 64% of transplants coming from posthumous donors.
