Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, has lost its appeal against the European Union's decision to recognize the digital company as a “gatekeeper” - a platform with special influence - under the EU's new law on digital markets.

The Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, has lost its appeal against the European Union's decision to recognize the digital company as a "gatekeeper" - a platform with special influence - under the EU's new law on digital markets, the Court of Justice of the European Union reported on Wednesday, UNN writes.

Details

"The EU Court of Justice has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Bytedance (TikTok) against the European Commission's decision to appoint it a "gatekeeper," the statement reads.

It is stated that the court dismissed Bytedance's lawsuit in today's decision, which was issued eight months after the lawsuit was filed.

The CJEU ruled that "the European Commission was fully entitled to consider that Bytedance was a ‘gatekeeper’ under the new EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), as the owner of the short video app TikTok ‘meets the quantitative thresholds set out in the DMA in relation to, inter alia, its global market value, the number of TikTok users in the EU and the number of years in which this threshold relating to the number of users has been reached’.
