Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been called to testify as a witness in an investigation into alleged corruption and influence peddling charges against his wife. In April 2024, the circumstances of the case led Spain's top official to consider resigning. A court spokesman said Sanchez's testimony would be “convenient, useful and relevant” to the investigation to determine whether influence peddling took place.

This is the first time that a sitting Spanish Prime Minister has been called to testify in a trial since Mariano Rajoy (Spanish politician, leader of the Popular Party since 2004 - ed.) was called to testify in 2017 as part of a corruption case that led to the conviction of several members of the Popular Party (PP).
