The airport in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, reported that 33 flights were canceled on Saturday. Two planes en route to Madeira were forced to land on the island of Porto Santo.
Forecasters predict that the strong gusts of wind that have gripped the archipelago will continue at least until Sunday evening.
The transportation collapse created serious problems for thousands of tourists who planned to visit Madeira during the Christmas and New Year season.
