The Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets appealed to the UN regarding the destruction of Tauric Chersonese in the temporarily occupied Crimea by Russia, UNN reports .
Details
According to Lubinets, since 2014, Russia has launched a large-scale operation to destroy Ukrainian cultural heritage, and for almost 10 years there has been no reaction to this crime - historical monuments have disappeared without a trace, and the world has been silent.
Now, the Russians have completely destroyed the authentic monument of world significance, Chersonesos Tavriya. They started illegal construction work on the ruins of Chersonesos, actually building a new city - the so-called historical and archaeological park. The developers fenced off the archaeological remains that were on the surface with observation platforms, and several excavated sites were moved and rebuilt elsewhere. An amphitheater was built on the site of the ancient citadel, which puts a strain on the original structure. Many archaeological finds were actually stolen by Russia and taken to Russian museums
The Ombudsman appealed to the UN regarding the destruction of Chersonesos Tavriya and noted that Russia should be held accountable for the destruction of cultural heritage under international law, as well as for the theft of museum exhibits that the occupiers are taking out of the TOT of Ukraine on a large scale.
Recall
Last year, it was reported that the Russian occupiers looted the Chersonesos Tavriya Museum-Reserve and took a large number of valuable artifacts, including Byzantine gold, to Veliky Novgorod. At the same time, they claimed that the items were intended for an exhibition.
