Poland has committed itself to training the Ukrainian Legion, a special volunteer force consisting of Ukrainian citizens, on its territory. This was stated on Polish Radio by Deputy Minister of Defense of Poland Pawel Zalewski, reports UNN.

Details

Zalewski explained that this legion is a volunteer formation, and Poland has nothing to do with recruiting Ukrainians to join it. Recruitment will take place through Ukrainian consular offices, and all volunteers will be drafted into the Armed Forces of Ukraine based on Ukrainian rules.

As part of the bilateral security agreement between Poland and Ukraine, Poland will provide basic military training for the Ukrainian Legion at one of its training grounds. Upon completion of the training, Ukrainian soldiers will return to Ukraine to perform their tasks on the front line in accordance with Ukrainian law.

Zalewski emphasized that the agreement does not impose any obligations on Poland that would go beyond the current legal order. He also emphasized that Ukrainian servicemen will have the right to return to their families after completing their service.

Earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that several thousand Ukrainians living in Poland have already registered to join the Ukrainian Legion. Preparations for the first Ukrainian brigade of volunteers have already begun.
