In the Chernihiv region, law enforcement officers have opened a criminal investigation into the destruction of a cemetery where victims of the Holodomor are buried

In the Chernihiv region, Priluky police are investigating the incident of possible destruction of Holodomor victims' graves in the territory of the Ladan community. A criminal investigation has been opened and documents are being studied. This is reported by the Main Department of the National Police in the Chernihiv region, writes UNN.

Investigators of the Priluky District Police Department are investigating the legality of the actions of local authorities in carrying out works on the improvement and arrangement of the territory in the center of the village of Ivkivtsi, Priluky district. In particular, it concerns damage to the area where victims of the Holodomor could have been buried. A criminal investigation has been opened

- the statement reads.

It is noted that the investigative task force of the Priluky district police department worked at the scene, which inspected the territory and questioned local residents. Currently, investigators are studying documents related to this event.

Based on this fact, the police opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Desecration of a grave or other burial place). The Priluky District Prosecutor's Office is in charge of the proceedings.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and the police continue to study the necessary documentation regarding the existence of Holodomor-era burials at the site of the works and are preparing requests to the relevant authorities.

In the village of Ivkivtsi, Chernihiv region, bulldozers leveled the cemetery with the graves of victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933. The village council stated that according to the documents there is no cemetery there, and called the work landscaping of the territory.

Later, the head of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, Vyacheslav Chaus, stated that an investigation into the legality of the works on the burial site of victims of the Holodomor had been launched. The head of the Priluky Regional State Administration was instructed to assemble a commission to study the situation.
