According to the Moldovan intelligence service, the detention took place at the entrance to the country as part of criminal proceedings under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases.
The SIS stated that the suspect tried to enter Moldova under the guise of a tourist trip.
The officer attempted to enter Moldova under a pre-prepared cover, declaring a tourist purpose for the visit, including visiting monasteries. In reality, his ultimate goal was the left bank region of the Dniester
According to the investigation, the main purpose of the Russian's stay was to gather information that could be used to the detriment of Moldova's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and state security.
At the request of prosecutors, the court imposed a preventive measure on the suspect in the form of pre-trial detention for a period of 30 days.
The intelligence service also reported that this Russian citizen had already been on the territory of Moldova in 2017–2019. According to the authorities, at that time he carried out activities directed against the security and territorial integrity of the state.
It is noted that during that period he used a diplomatic passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, but did not undergo the accreditation procedure with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova as provided for by the Vienna Convention.
