Lack of proper hygiene can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Smoking and poor oral hygiene increase the risk of mouth and throat cancer. Every year on March 20, the World Oral Health Day is celebrated, which was established to draw attention to the importance of a daily routine for caring for teeth and gums. UNN has prepared a guide with simple rules for oral care.

Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes twice a day

Studies indicate that the duration of brushing should be at least 2 minutes. The duration determines the effectiveness of oral cleaning, which reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Pay attention to the cleaning technique

The most effective method of brushing teeth is recognized as the Bass technique.  Recommendations according to this technique are as follows:

-      Position the brush at a 45-degree angle to the tooth surface;

-      Make smooth sweeping movements from the front to the back teeth;

-      The chewing surface of the teeth should be cleaned in a circular motion;

-      Remember to clean your tongue.

Use a toothpaste with the correct fluoride concentration

The fluoride content should always be indicated on the packaging. Adults are recommended to use a toothpaste containing at least 1350 ppm fluoride. If you have sensitive teeth, it is not recommended to use toothpastes containing fluoride.

There are special toothpastes for children, but it is not always necessary to use them. Children of any age can use family toothpaste if it contains 1350-1500 ppm fluoride. The amount of toothpaste on a toothbrush for children should be the size of a pea.

Use dental floss

It helps clean hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.  Actually, flossing is not just for removing food debris. Flossing regularly reduces the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Change the toothbrush every 3 months

Over time, the brush wears out and loses its elasticity, which reduces the effectiveness of cleaning. In addition, over time, bacteria accumulate on the brush, which can cause oral inflammation.

It is important that even if you do not experience toothache, but you are concerned about bad breath, gum recession, or other problems, do not delay in visiting a doctor.
