Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine exposed a "mothballed" FSB agent who was collecting intelligence in the border area of Sumy region, the SBU reports, UNN writes.
Details
According to the investigation, he was recruited before the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, and until May 2022 he served as deputy head of one of the united territorial communities in the region.
When a part of Sumy region was occupied, the offender left for Russia through an enemy checkpoint. On the territory of the aggressor country, he met with his FSB supervisor, from whom he received a task to carry out reconnaissance and subversive activities in Ukraine, the SBU said.
"A few days later, the Russian agent returned to the border area, part of which was still occupied, and explained his disappearance by allegedly being "captured" by the Nazis. On the instructions of the curator from the enemy special service, the defendant, while serving as deputy head of the ATC, continued to collect information on the locations of movement and weapons of Ukrainian defenders in the border area," the SBU reported.
Later, the offender resigned from his position and got a job at a local agricultural company and, under the guise of business trips, was reconnoitering information for the occupiers. In particular, he found out the locations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service and the National Guard, which are involved in the defense of the northeastern borders of Ukraine.
Using personal connections, the traitor reportedly collected personal data of military unit commanders and local community leaders. SBU counterintelligence officers detained the offender while he was trying to pass on the geolocations of several units of the Defense Forces.
The detainee was served a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law). He is in custody. He faces life imprisonment.
