The German government supports the proposal to include in the 14th package of European sanctions against russia embargo on imports of russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU. According to Deutsche Welle, this was stated by German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy Robert Habeck, UNN.
Yes, I support this. Germany no longer needs LNG from russia, we no longer have contracts with russia to supply it either
He added that if "molecules of russian gas" get into the gas transportation system, it is solely the result of LNG purchases on the world market.
Robert Habeck said that if Germany was able to get rid of even the infrastructural dependence on russian pipeline gas, other countries could follow suit. "What Germany has been able to do with gas should also be possible for other countries in other energy areas," the minister said, referring not only to russian LNG but also to exports of nuclear power plant fuel from russia to the eU.
Context
According to experts, russia is currently the second largest LNG supplier to the EU after the US. Its share in total imports is 16%.
Recall
European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson said that the eU is increasing pressure on russia's liquefied natural gas importers. The EU's efforts are aimed at redistributing supplies and undermining the financing of the russian war machine.
