Chief Designer of Fire Point: Our weapons have no hidden 'kill switches,' which provides independence in the security sphere

The Ukrainian company Fire Point creates strike drones and missiles on an open architecture. Co-founder Denys Shtilerman stated that this guarantees the independence of countries in the security sphere.

Ukrainian company Fire Point, which specializes in manufacturing strike drones and missiles, offers solutions built on open-source software and open architecture. Such defense solutions contain no hidden "kill switches" that give control to the manufacturer. This was stated during a briefing at the international exhibition Eurosatory-2026 in Paris by the co-founder and chief designer of the Ukrainian company Fire Point, Denys Shtilerman, reports UNN.

According to Shtilerman, artificial intelligence is significantly changing the situation and devaluing software. Instead, production capacities and high-tech capabilities are becoming more valuable.

"Another important thing: AI is coming in the near future. All the software you consider your intellectual property is already worth zero, because AI now works as a junior developer, but responds not in a week, but in 15 minutes. The only thing that starts to cost is production capacities and high-tech capabilities. That is why we are building our entire platform on open architecture and open-source software: we show clients that there is no 'kill switch' inside the missile. We believe that such means, based on open software solutions, allow any country to be confident in their true independence in the field of security. Because now, when buying security, you must also buy independence," explained Shtilerman.

Fire Point localizes up to 90% of its product production, betting on technological independence - Iryna Terekh19.06.26, 12:30

He gave a concrete example when such a "kill switch" worked against the weapon user.

"A good example is Qatar spent 20 billion dollars on an air defense system, and then one day, when Israeli aviation was flying to destroy the leader of Hezbollah, the radars simply turned off. If you spent 20 billion on your defense, you must be independent in your defense. Open-source software is the way to minimize testing costs: if tested in one country, it is immediately available in another country," emphasized Shtilerman.

Recall

As reported by EO and CTO of Fire Point Iryna Terekh, the ballistic missile  FP-7 produced by the Ukrainian company Fire Point is already undergoing certification, and the launch of the ballistic missile FP-9 is expected by the end of the year.

Ukraine also initiated the creation of a pan-European anti-ballistic shield – Freyja. The basis of this air defense system is the Ukrainian ballistic interceptor missile FP-7.x, created by the Ukrainian manufacturer Fire Point. It is called an analogue of the American Patriot PAC-3 system. However, Ukrainian missiles are significantly cheaper – their price is expected to be about 700 thousand dollars per unit compared to 3.8 million dollars for one American missile.

During a recent test  the FP-7.x reached a flight altitude of 25 kilometers, which is comparable to the performance of the Patriot system.

On June 16, the German manufacturer of radar systems Hensoldt joined the project to create the pan-European anti-ballistic shield Freyja.

According to information from open sources, in addition to German long-range detection radars, Freyja will also include an illumination and guidance radar Weibel GFTR-2100/48 or Leonardo KRONOS Land. The command post will be based on the Norwegian Kongsberg Fire Distribution Center system. One of the key features of the system will be an open architecture and the use of Network Access Nodes modules, which will allow the integration of additional solutions and components.

Data exchange between all elements of the system will be carried out via the tactical Link 16 channel, standardized according to STANAG 5516. It is this protocol that should ensure the integration of Freyja into the existing air defense system of Ukraine and other European countries.
