The European Union has been steadfastly supporting Georgia and condemning the occupation of its territories by Russia over the past 16 years. This is stated in a statement by EU High Representative Josep Borrell, UNN reports.

Details

August 7 marks the 16th anniversary of the outbreak of the war between Russia and Georgia in August 2008. The European Union's commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflicts in Georgia remains firm. We reiterate our condemnation of Russia's military presence in the occupied breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which is a violation of international law and Russia's commitments under the six-point agreement of 12 August 2008

- said the EU diplomat.

He also emphasized that human rights violations against the conflict-affected population in Georgia continue, including as a result of the "borderization" policy, the closure of crossing points and illegal detentions by the Russian military and de facto authorities.

Restrictions on freedom of movement must end, human rights violations must be investigated, and justice must be provided for all victims

- Borrell emphasized.

According to him, the European Union is in favor of a peaceful resolution of the conflict, including the EU's participation in the so-called Geneva discussions.

We call on all participants in the Geneva discussions to engage constructively in the discussions in order to fully implement the six-point agreement of August 12, 2008. The EU underlines its unwavering support for Georgia's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders

- summarizes a senior EU official.
