New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon apologized to about 200,000 victims of physical and sexual abuse in institutions, which an investigation called a “national disgrace.

In July, a commission of inquiry into nursing home abuse in New Zealand released a shocking report after several years of investigation. According to the report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry, between 1950 and 1999, about 200,000 children, young people and vulnerable adults were victims of physical and sexual abuse in state-run, especially religious, care facilities.
The six-year public inquiry is considered the largest, longest and most complex ever conducted in New Zealand. The Commission collected evidence and testimonies from more than 2,400 victims and made 138 recommendations.
“I am sorry that we did not believe you when you reported your abuse. Some of you will feel that my words mean little after so much time and pain. But I hope that today, with this apology and acknowledgement of your suffering, some of you will feel a little bit better,” he told the parliament.
Lacson cited the example of Lake Alice Psychiatric Hospital in rural areas, where patients recall being sterilized without their knowledge, used for unethical medical experiments, and punished with electric shocks.

As part of the apology, the New Zealand government wants to introduce new measures to improve security in state care facilities and remove monuments in honor of proven criminals.
