Due to heavy rains, the Ndjili River overflowed, flooding Kinshasa. At least 33 people died, houses were destroyed, and access to drinking water was difficult.

Last week, heavy rains began in Congo, causing the Ndjili River to overflow and flood hundreds of buildings in the country's capital. The death toll has reached 33 people. This is reported by UNN with reference to NBCnews.

The flood flooded almost half of Kinshasa, the capital of Congo, and the water blocked access to the flooded houses.

"As of Sunday evening, the deaths of another ten people have been confirmed in addition to the 23 who died the day before," Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani said on state television on Sunday evening.

Although the situation improved as of Monday morning, some access roads remained blocked and vehicle traffic was limited. The main road to the airport, which connects the capital with the rest of the country, is also damaged. But the authorities promised to open it for 72 hours for all transport so that people could leave.

Due to the natural disaster, access to drinking water has become more difficult in at least 16 communes. Water supply facilities were damaged there.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Congo, the government has created at least four shelters for hundreds of people across the city who have lost their homes.

Many residents blamed the government for not responding quickly enough to the natural disaster.

Officials said most of the deaths were caused by walls that collapsed shortly after the flood began.
