In the Chinese city of Chengdu, in the southwest of the country, a 28-year-old woman who was a surrogate mother found herself without the support of the agency that organized her pregnancy. This caused a wave of outrage on social media and drew public attention to the activities of illegal surrogacy agencies.
The Chinese health authorities have already launched an investigation into the circumstances, as surrogacy is prohibited in the country. The government strictly controls this area: last year, officials promised to take strict measures against any form of illegal activity related to reproductive technologies, including the sale of sperm and eggs.
