UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk has called for an end to the violence in Bangladesh. He appealed to the government to stop repressing peaceful protesters and to comply with international obligations to protect freedom of assembly and expression.
The student protests, which began last month over a quota system for public sector jobs, later escalated into larger-scale actions, including demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Almost 300 people were killed in clashes between protesters and security forces.
