Two new far-right groups failed to win any of the fourteen vice-presidential positions: neither Patriots for Europe, led by Jordan Bardella of the French National Rally, nor Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) will be represented in the European Parliament's bureau that sets the rules and budget for the parliament.
Far-right candidates were rejected on Tuesday as part of a coordinated effort by center-left parties.
Last week, a spokesperson for the European People's Party (EPP) confirmed that talks were underway with other center-left groups. Parliamentarians have found an opportunity to block the radical right and Putin's friends from influential positions during the tenth legislative term of the European Parliament, Euronews reports.
“Patriots for Europe has nominated two candidates: former Frontex chief Fabrice Legeri of the National Union and Klara Dostalova of the Czech ANO party, formerly a member of the liberal Restore Europe group.
The Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN), considered to be on the far right, has introduced Polish lawmaker Ewa Zajączkowska, who comes from the Confederation Party. Addendum
A representative of Patriots for Europe called this barrier to deterring the far right “undemocratic” and an insult to “millions of European citizens who have the right to be heard.
Paolo Borcia, MEP from the Italian League party, responded:
I did not decide that the Patriots for Europe group is the third largest group in the European Parliament, the voters did
German Green MEP Daniel Freund told Euronews that political parties that campaigned on an anti-European platform should not hold responsible positions in the institution. “If their political goal is to destroy this parliament, they should not be responsible for its governance. That is why we are applying a sanitary cordon,” he said.
