Today, July 4, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Forensic Expert. The event was launched by a presidential decree in 2009, UNN reports.

The profession of a forensic expert is very important because it is with their help that justice is not based on guesswork, but on facts and evidence. Thanks to these experts, the innocent are acquitted and the guilty are punished. The course of a crime investigation depends on the accuracy and objectivity of the expertise.

There are a large number of different forensic examinations. In particular, forensic investigations are divided into trace, explosive, biological, handwriting, linguistic, etc.

It is believed that the world's first forensic laboratory was created in 1910 by Edmond Lockard, the father of modern forensics.

One of the oldest expert institutions in Ukraine is the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise, which was established on July 4, 1913 as the Cabinet of Scientific and Forensic Expertise under the Prosecutor of the Kyiv Judicial Chamber.

Today, one of the key tasks of Ukrainian experts is to thoroughly document the war crimes of the Russian aggressors for an indisputable evidence base in international courts.

In particular, over the past year, experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute conducted 30,000 examinations on the facts of Russian aggression.

"It's not just about researching Russian weapons. These are engineering and technical examinations of the destruction of movable and immovable property as a result of hostilities, economic examinations to calculate the corresponding losses for the state as a whole and for people individually, computer and technical examinations of enemy equipment and electronic means, and much more. About 90% of the examinations were performed at the request of law enforcement agencies," Oleksandr Ruvin, Director of KFI, said earlier.
