For the first time since russian troops blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, the water level in the Dnipro River in Zaporizhzhia has almost returned to its "usual" levels. This was stated by Mykhailo Mulenko, acting head of the nature protection sector of the Khortytsia National Reserve, according to Suspilne TV channel, UNN reports .

Details

It is noted that currently, for the first time since June 2023 , the Dnipro rapids and the banks of Khortytsia in Zaporizhzhia are almost flooded. The reason for this is the spring  flood.

In 70, almost 80 years, the water has returned to the same Velykyi Luh in a natural way. Well, almost naturally. That is, it is the flood. Now we can see a rise of about 3-3.5, sometimes even 4 meters from that minimum. That is, half a meter or a meter lower than what was at the Kakhovka reservoir

- Mykhailo Mulenko told .

The scientist explained that the Dnipro River in Zaporizhzhia was filled with meltwater that had accumulated in upstream reservoirs. Now it is already filling the small rivers of Zaporizhzhia and the floodplains on Khortytsia.

According to Mykhailo Mulenko, the flood will last until the end of May. But in July, the water level in the Dnipro will drop again to the level it was last summer, after the occupiers blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant.

Addendum

In addition, according to Mykhailo Mulenko , there is already water in the Kakhovka reservoir itself.

He explained that a large reservoir is currently being formed within Vasylivka, Kamianka-Dniprovka, and Nikopol. Also, the acting head of the nature protection sector of the Khortytsia National Reserve explained that the floods are already having a significant impact on the nature of the banks of both the Dnipro and the Kakhovka reservoir.

Willow, poplar. When they are under water for two months, it does not harm them, they do not die. And as soon as the water goes down, they immediately start growing even faster. Deer and roe deer enter the territory of the former reservoir. Willow shoots are almost a delicacy for them. There is a possible negative factor. Due to the fact that this territory is connected to the mainland by land, predators can enter it

- said Mulenko.

Separately, the scientist emphasized that archaeological research activities on the island will not be suspended due to the flood. At the same time, specialists will have to work much faster in the future.

Secondary destruction of the newly formed shore occurs. The sand is washed away, and artifacts come to the surface. We must find new artifacts before the treasure hunters do. If any finds are damaged, rescue work must be carried out urgently on the spot. There are preserved underwater archaeological sites. They are located just in the area of the current

- explained Mulenko.
