With the start of the heating season, housing cooperatives across Poland are conducting temperature checks in apartments. This is aimed at combating the so-called “thermal parasitism” - the practice of residents turning off the heating in their homes and relying on heat from their neighbors.
This has several negative consequences, because the lack of proper heating contributes to it:
- increase in heating costs for other residents;
- unfair distribution of bills;
- damage to the building (increased dampness or mold growth).

According to the Minister of Infrastructure, the minimum temperature in residential areas should be 20°C and in bathrooms 24°C. However, some communities allow the temperature to be lowered to 16-17°C. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in a fine of up to PLN 500.
