On March 11, at a plenary session, the judges of the International Criminal Court elected a new ICC presidency for 2024-2027. In particular. Tomoko Akane, who issued the arrest warrant for Putin, was elected President of the International Criminal Court. The appointment was announced by the press service of the International Criminal Court, UNN reports.

Details

According to the agency, Judge Tomoko Akane was elected President of the Court.

On the same day, the magistrate Rosario Salvatore Aitala was elected first vice president, and Judge Reine Alapini-Gansu was elected second vice president.

It is noted that members of the Presidency are elected for a term of three years.

I am honored to have been elected by my fellow judges to the office of President of the International Criminal Court. At this challenging time, the Court needs stable, cooperative and united leadership. I will focus on facilitating dialogue between the organs of the Court, the defense and victims' representatives, as well as on strengthening the dialogue with States Parties and States that have not yet ratified the Rome Statute. I will also prioritize the safety and well-being of the Court's staff.

," said newly elected ICC President Akane.

The Presidency, composed of the President and two Vice-Presidents, plays a key role in providing strategic direction to the ICC as a whole. The Presidency coordinates with other bodies and seeks the agreement of the Prosecutor on matters of mutual interest.

In accordance with the Rome Statute, the ICC's governing treaty, the Presidency is responsible for the proper administration of the Court, with the exception of the Office of the Prosecutor. The Presidency supervises the activities of the Registry and provides input on a wide range of administrative policies affecting the overall functioning of the Court. In addition, it exercises judicial review of certain decisions of the Registrar and concludes agreements on cooperation within the Court with states and international organizations.

Optional

Last summer, the Russians put on the wanted list for International Criminal Court judge Tomoko Akane, who issued the arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin. It is noteworthy that the article under which Russian criminal investigators are looking for Tomoko Akane was not disclosed.

It should be noted that in March, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Children's Rights Commissioner Levova-Belova for the illegal deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children.

In the cases that will be considered by the International Criminal Court, Russia will be accused of abducting Ukrainian children and deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure.
