The Brovary City Council decided to appeal to the Verkhovna Rada to retain the historical name "Brovary" for the city, based on expert opinions from reputable Ukrainian scientific institutions.

The desire of Brovary residents to keep the city's current historical name and not to rename it Brovari is supported by expert opinions from several respected Ukrainian scientific institutions. This was announced by the mayor of Brovary, Ihor Sapozhko, in an exclusive commentary to UNNafter today's extraordinary session of the Brovary City Council.

The mayor noted that as soon as some MPs came up with the idea to rename Brovary to Brovari, the city authorities immediately turned to scientists to provide reasoned conclusions on the issue.

"We approached this issue quite professionally. We have the conclusion of the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine that the city of Brovary is historically called that.

There are conclusions from the Institute of Cossacks of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences, which state that the city should be called  Brovary," said Ihor Sapozhko.

The mayor added that at an extraordinary session, members of the Brovary City Council decided to appeal to the Verkhovna Rada to remind the MPs who authored the renaming resolution of the findings of scientists and the position of Brovary residents who are against changing the city's name.

"Given that the initiative to rename the city has been repeatedly considered by the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada, and that we have repeatedly appealed with certain justifications, the deputies today decided to adopt the relevant decision of the local government and appeal to the Verkhovna Rada to keep the historical name of Brovary.

In my opinion, taking into account independent polls, with today's vote, when 24 deputies supported the appeal to the Verkhovna Rada, we have clearly expressed the opinion of the residents that the city should be called Brovary," summarized Igor Sapozhko.

Context

A group of MPs led by a representative of the Voice faction, Roman Lozynskyi, registered a resolution in the Verkhovna Rada to rename Brovary to Brovari.

Local residents, with whom UNN spoke , do not support this idea. In particular, they do not understand where the name "Brovari" actually came from, which, moreover, does not sound very nice.

Brovary residents also say that MPs simply have nothing to do. And such controversial decisions are definitely not the right time.

Famous residents of Brovary are categorically against the renaming: multiple European and world swimming champion Oleh Lisohor, future participant of the Olympic Games in Paris, wrestler Alina Grushina (Akobia), former world champion in professional boxing Yuriy Nuzhnenko and many others.
