Guinea pigs are native to the Andes Mountains. For a long time, guinea pigs were domesticated animals for some indigenous peoples of South America, and their meat was used to prepare various dishes.

Today, on July 16, animal rights activists in many countries can join the celebration of Thanksgiving Day for the harbor porpoise, UNN reports.

Guinea pigs are native to the Andes Mountains. For a long time, guinea pigs were domesticated animals for some indigenous peoples of South America, and their meat was used to prepare various dishes.

At the same time, there is historical evidence that in some cultures guinea pigs were worshipped as deities.

In the sixteenth century, these animals were brought to Europe. This is the origin of their name, because they resembled pigs in appearance and were brought by sea. For some time, guinea pigs were considered exotic animals and an attribute of wealthy people. Later, due to a certain biological similarity to humans, these cute animals began to be used for various medical experiments. Therefore, one of the main goals of today's event is to call on the society to completely stop laboratory research on guinea pigs.

Another zoological event today is World Snake Day.

Today, science knows about about three thousand species of snakes. In Ukraine, 11 species of snakes can be found.

Snakes are important to the balance of the planet's ecosystem because they regulate the population of insects, small amphibians, and mammals.

The largest venomous snake in the world is the king cobra, which can be up to 6 meters long, and the most non-poisonous is the reticulated python. It can grow up to 12 meters in length.

Accountants and auditors celebrate their professional holiday in Ukraine today. The event was launched in 2018.

The need for income and expense accounting dates back to ancient times, when people first exchanged certain goods and resources, and later began to sell and buy them.

During the excavations of Trypillian culture settlements, archaeologists found plates with certain signs on which the ancestors of Ukrainians are believed to have kept records of grain, cattle, etc.

In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, during the heyday of merchant guilds, people began to appear in Ukraine who helped merchants keep cash books.

According to the church calendar, today is the day of remembrance of the holy martyr Athenogenes and 10 of his disciples.

Athenogenes was a preacher, theologian, and bishop in the city of Sebastia in Asia Minor.

During the intensification of the persecution of Christians, by order of the local ruler, Atinogenes and his disciples were captured and ordered to sacrifice to pagan gods. The bishop and his disciples refused to do so. They were tortured for a long time and brutally executed.

On July 16, Fedir, Yakiv, Valentina, and Yulia celebrate their name days.
