Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei commented on the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former Defense Minister and Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri.
“They have issued an arrest warrant, this is not enough... These criminal leaders should be sentenced to death,” Khamenei said, referring to Israeli leaders.
In their decision , the ICC judges statedthat there are reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Yoav Galant are criminally responsible for murder, persecution and starvation as a means of warfare as part of a “widespread and systematic attack on the civilian population of Gaza.
The decision was met with outrage in Israel, which called it shameful and absurd. Gazans expressed hope that it would help end the violence and bring those responsible for war crimes to justice.
At the same time, Israel rejects the jurisdiction of the Hague Court and denies war crimes in Gaza.
The arrest warrant for Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri includes charges of mass murder during the events of October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel that led to a war against the long-blockaded Palestinian enclave, as well as charges of rape and hostage-taking.
Israel claimed to have killed Masri, also known as Mohammed Deif, in an airstrike in July, but Hamas has neither confirmed nor denied this.
