The AH-64 Apache helicopter reportedly crashed during routine flight training at Fort Novosel Army Base, about 151 kilometers south of Montgomery, according to a statement from the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel.

An instructor pilot was killed in the accident and an injured U.S. Army student pilot was transported by airplane.

Dale County Coroner John Cowley identified the deceased instructor pilot as 46-year-old Daniel Munger, who was a contract pilot and retired from the Army.

Military authorities did not provide any information about the circumstances of the accident. The statement said an investigation into the accident was underway.

The AH-64 Apache is a dual crewed aircraft.

Fort Novosel was formerly known as Fort Rucker. It is a major training center for helicopter pilots.
