Prosecutors of the Halych District Prosecutor's Office of Lviv have filed an indictment in court against a resident of the Lviv region who, taking advantage of the vulnerable state of relatives of a missing serviceman, misled them. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General, according to UNN.
Details
It was established that in March 2025, at a soldier's funeral, he met a man whose son had gone missing six months prior in the Bakhmut direction.
The accused claimed to have "connections" in the intelligence services and the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, and that he could find and return the body of the missing person. He also claimed that he had allegedly already helped return the body of another soldier
In reality, the man only imitated the search. While telling stories about fictional trips, he constantly demanded funds for "urgent expenses," but never even left the borders of the Lviv region.
Over the course of five months, he received more than 2 million 110 thousand UAH from the soldier's brother. After the final payment, he claimed that the missing person was allegedly alive and being held in a pre-trial detention center in Voronezh.
The deception was uncovered after the family contacted the Coordinating Headquarters, which confirmed that the information provided was untrue. Following this, the victim turned to law enforcement.
The actions of the accused are classified under Part 5 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — fraud on an especially large scale.
