Rail traffic across Germany was completely halted on Tuesday evening due to a massive IT system failure. Due to a malfunction in the digital radio network, Deutsche Bahn had to stop all trains at stations, reports UNN citing the BBC.

Around 22:30 local time, the operator reported a malfunction in the GSM-R system, a special communication network used by train drivers and control centers. As a result, long-distance, regional, and suburban train services were suspended nationwide.

Passengers were advised to seek alternative transportation, as numerous delays and cancellations were expected. Deutsche Bahn also promised to provide affected passengers with vouchers for taxis and hotel accommodation.
Traffic resumed after more than two hours
According to the company, specialists managed to fix the malfunction more than two and a half hours after the traffic halt. After that, rail services began to gradually resume.
Berlin's city railway S-Bahn also separately reported the restoration of operations. The causes of the failure have not yet been disclosed, and the operator has not yet released information on the number of affected passengers.
