Impersonating the military: Kyiv exposes fraudsters who embezzled almost UAH 2 million in aid for the Armed Forces

Kyiv law enforcement officers detained two fraudsters who, under the guise of "military", fraudulently seized charitable aid for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, UNN reports with reference to the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, UNN

Details

Law enforcers emphasize that without having any relation to the Armed Forces, the defendants sent letters to charities and volunteer organizations on behalf of military units asking for humanitarian aid.

The fraud was uncovered when representatives of the charity foundation contacted one of the military units to confirm that they had received the aid, but the military said they had not written any letters to the foundation and had not received any aid.

At present, the involvement of the suspects in seven episodes of fraud totaling about UAH 1.7 million has been established.

Under the procedural supervision of the Podilskyi District Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv, two residents of the capital were served a notice of suspicion of fraud (Part 4 Art. 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine

Investigators found out that representatives of charitable foundations contacted the fraudsters at the phone numbers they provided and agreed to provide the necessary assistance. 

Later, the defendants, posing as representatives of military units, wearing military uniforms and bearing the seals of allegedly these units, received tactical weapons, medical equipment and first aid kits from representatives of the funds, which they sold at their own discretion.

At the same time, they drew up an act of acceptance/transfer of aid. The fraudsters even agreed to take a joint photo as proof of the foundation's assistance to the military unit.

During the searches, about half a million hryvnias, mobile phones, computer equipment, forged documents and seals of military units, humanitarian aid, military uniforms and other material evidence were seized from the suspects.
