"Since Russia has called into question the European peace order, a special threatening situation has arisen for Germany and its allies," said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
According to him, the goal of modernizing the German army is to "restructure the Bundeswehr in such a way that it is optimal even in case of emergency, in case of defense, in case of war."
Reportedly, the new German armed forces will consist of four branches of the army, navy, and air force, as well as a new branch of the army - cyber and information and space forces. Operational and auxiliary commands will also be created.
The new cyber unit will be responsible for combating hybrid threats, as well as performing tactical tasks such as electronic warfare.
The army will now cover internal security forces, and the air force will monitor the condition of its aircraft, a function previously performed by the defense ministry.
According to Pistorius, he expects the changes to be implemented in the coming months.
The Minister also said: "We have considered the issue of reintroducing compulsory military service," although this issue is not currently under consideration.
