Forecasters also said that more strengthening is expected over the next 12 hours, followed by weakening before it becomes a post-tropical cyclone on Tuesday.
Hurricane Ernesto is located approximately 1,312 km southwest of Newfoundland, Canada, and has maximum sustained winds of 120 km per hour, according to the latest data.
Center Ernesto will pass near southeastern Newfoundland from late Monday through Tuesday morning, bringing wind, waves and rain, the NHC added.
Ernesto is the fifth Atlantic storm to bear the name in what is expected to be an intense hurricane season.
