The Peruvian government has declared an environmental state of emergency in the northern coastal region, where last week the state-owned oil company Petroperu spilled oil into the Pacific Ocean. This is reported by France 24, according to UNN.

It is noted that according to the state-owned energy company Petroperu, the cleanup of half a dozen beaches in Talara province is almost complete.
Local authorities reported that the spill caused damage to coastal plants and animals, including crabs. Work is currently being planned to minimize the threat to birds, fauna and trade in the area, which depends on fishing and tourism.
Petroperu did not report how much crude oil was spilled into the ocean, but according to a preliminary report by environmental watchdog OEFA, the spill affected approximately 10,000 square meters of seawater surface. The Peruvian Ministry of Environment noted that at least seven beaches and local wildlife were affected.
The 90-day state of emergency is aimed at guaranteeing sustainable management of the territory, carrying out restoration and elimination works to reduce environmental pollution.
