The Chinese Coast Guard reported observing Philippine patrol and fishing vessels gathered near the disputed Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea. China claims to have “indisputable sovereignty” over the Spratly Islands.
Chinese coast guard spokesman Gan Yu said the surveillance began on Saturday. He added that Philippine boats and fishing boats are in the waters alongside the Philippine vessel, which China considers to be “illegally stranded”.
