It is not yet known how many people were injured in the incident in Changde, Hunan province. A brief statement by state broadcaster CCTV said that "specific casualties are being investigated.
A video posted on social media shows dozens of terrified students screaming and running into the schoolyard, while a man's voice can be heard in the background shouting "quickly, quickly.
Another video showed many people, including adults, lying on the road, apparently injured. Police can be seen handcuffing a man in front of a car.
The police have not yet released a report on the incident.

The country has been rocked by a recent spate of public attacks that have frightened a population long accustomed to low levels of violent crime. Last Monday, China suffered its deadliest attack in a decade when 35 people were killed after a man drove a car into a crowd of people exercising in an open area in the southern city of Zhuhai. A few days later, eight people were killed and 17 others injured in an attack on a college campus in eastern China.
