The rescued Himalayan bear Yampil died in a Scottish zoo after failing to recover from anesthesia during transportation for treatment.

The Himalayan bear Yampil, who was rescued by the Ukrainian military in Donetsk region in the summer of 2022, died in the Scottish Five Sisters Zoo. This was reported by the organization UAnimals, UNN reports .

Details

Yampil was unable to regain consciousness after anesthesia, which was administered to him to transfer him to another enclosure for treatment. Despite the veterinarians' efforts, they failed to resuscitate the bear.

The zoo expressed deep sadness over Yampol's death and asked for time to come to terms with this tragic event.

Context

Yampil was found by the Ukrainian military in a private zoo in the village of Yampil, Donetsk region, after the de-occupation. He was locked in a cramped enclosure without food or water, under constant shelling.

Thanks to the efforts of the military and volunteers, Yampol was evacuated to the Ukrainian shelter "White Rock" and then to a nature reserve in Belgium. Eventually, he found his home in Scotland.
