Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City Court on Tuesday upheld a death sentence for 67-year-old real estate mogul Truong Mi lan for her role in a 304 trillion VND (. 12.46 billion) financial fraud case, the largest in the country's history. This is reported by AP, writes UNN.
Details
The court rejected Truong Mi lan's appeal against the first-instance verdict, adding that her death sentence could be commuted to life imprisonment if she reimburses 3/4 of the damages, which amount to approximately 1 11 billion.
The convict's lawyers claimed that she returned the money, but the court did not agree with their arguments, since there were legal problems with some of the seized assets, and the prosecutor's office could not assess their value.
Also, her defenders noted several mitigating circumstances - Truong Milan pleaded guilty, repented and returned part of the amount.
However, the court ruled that its violations "negatively affected banking activities, caused public unrest and undermined people's trust.
