Ukraine is considering the possibility of using mobile ammunition recycling complexes to clean up the liberated territories, which would allow the recycled materials to be reused for the production of new ammunition, while reducing environmental pollution.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is considering the possibility of using mobile ammunition recycling complexes to clear the liberated territories of mines. This was reported by UNN with reference to a statement by Defense Minister Yuriy Dzhyhyr.

Details

As noted, the recycling products obtained through such complexes can be reused in the production of new ammunition for the needs of Ukrainian defenders.

Dzhyhyr noted that despite the active hostilities, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine continues to strengthen the environmental waste management system. According to him, without taking into account the territories where military operations are currently underway, up to one fifth of Ukraine's territory is contaminated with explosives.

According to various estimates, more than 20% of the fired munitions do not detonate. To this should be added the active use of mines. What should we do in the future? We see that there are technological solutions, and we are trying to launch mobile ammunition disposal complexes

 - said the Deputy Minister of Defense.

Such systems are widely used around the world. Especially in those countries where military operations have been or are ongoing, leaving large areas mined. Ukraine is currently looking for ways to obtain these systems.

Strengths of this initiative: the complexes are mobile, transportation and disposal are safe, and they make it possible to reuse the resulting disposal products for the production of new ammunition

- said Yuriy Dzhyhyr.

The Ministry of Defense said that the use of the systems after the victory will reduce the burden on the ecosystem, as they, in particular, reduce pollution of land, water, and air.

Addendum

The Ministry of Defense said that according to rough estimates, up to two million hectares of fields have been contaminated in the already liberated regions. In addition, six million hectares of land are potentially at risk in the temporarily occupied territory.

These are areas that will require inspection and demining after they are liberated.

The Ministry of Defense is currently working on legislative changes to enable the use of such mobile ammunition disposal complexes.

Necessary consultations have already been held with the State Emergency Service, the State Special Transport Service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, internal departmental units and organizations involved in humanitarian demining to launch the pilot project as soon as possible.

Recall

Ukraine has developed the Ratel Deminer remote demining systemcapable of detecting and defusing anti-personnel mines such as PFM-1, PMN-4, PMN-3 and PMN-2, which has already been tested for humanitarian demining near Sviatohirsk.
