On Saturday in Serbia, thousands of people took to the streets in protest in the city of Novi Sad in the north of the country to honor the memory of 16 people who died in 2024 after the collapse of a canopy at the railway station and to demand early general elections. It is noted that people stood in temperatures around 30 degrees and chanted "Victory" and mocked the current President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
Without free and fair elections, everything else is empty words
It is stated that protesters and human rights groups accuse Vučić and government officials of election fraud, violence against opponents, suppression of media freedom, corruption, and ties to organized crime. Vučić and his allies deny these accusations.
Serbia is a candidate for EU membership, but Belgrade must first improve the rule of law, including conditions for free and fair elections, the judicial system, and eradicate corruption and organized crime. Serbia must also align its foreign policy with that of the bloc, in particular by imposing sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine

In May, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić admitted that he might step down early before the end of his presidential term.
