Air measurements in Ternopil have not revealed any excesses of harmful substances after the emergency. Additional tests for formaldehyde and phenols are underway, as well as testing of drinking water.

The Ternopil Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention promptly sent a team to take measurements on the border of the residential area. The measurements were taken at several points, and no exceedances of harmful substances were detected at the moment. Further studies, including testing for formaldehyde and phenols, will take more time. This was reported by Oksana Chaichuk, Director General of the State Institution “Ternopil Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” during a briefing, UNN reports.

After our service received a notification of an emergency from the Emergency Service, an order was given to assemble a rapid response team specifically to respond to chemical hazards. And at about seven o'clock, a group from our institution, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, arrived at the scene. Measurements were taken on the border of the residential zone, conducted as of 9 o'clock, at seven points

-says Chaychuk.

According to her, measurements were made for the content of combustion products such as CO, CO2, NO2, chlorine-containing substances and other components, which are determined using rapid diagnostic devices.

“Why in this direction? According to the data received from the hydrometeorological service, the wind direction is southwest. The plume has risen quite high, and the harmful substances began to move in this direction. The mass is moving in the direction of Terebovlia and Kozova. Therefore, measurements are also carried out on the territory of the region, in the city of Terebovlia, nearby settlements and the urban-type settlement of Kozova. As of now, there are no exceedances of harmful substances, traces of CO2 combustion products and chlorine-containing substances have been detected that do not exceed the permissible concentrations in the air,” adds Chaychuk.

She emphasized that the next measurements will be made for formaldehyde and phenol content, but they require more time to conduct and analyze. These measurements have already begun, but their results require additional time to process.

“We have also taken drinking water from the water intakes in Ternopil to check for these substances. According to the results of rapid analysis, no harmful substances were found in the water. The monitoring work will continue until the air quality indicators are brought back to normal,” added Chaychuk.
