16 crew members of the MT Terra Nova tanker flying the Philippine flag have been rescued, one person remains missing, Transportation Minister Jaime Bautista said.
According to him, there was a fuel leak, but strong winds and high waves prevented the start of the cleanup. The spot stretched for several kilometers, AFP writes.
“We are working ahead of time and will try to do our best to immediately localize it and stop the fuel leak,” said Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Armando Balilo at a briefing.
He warned that if all the fuel oil from the tanker leaked out, it would be the largest spill in Philippine history.
“There is a great danger that Manila will be affected, even the coastline of Manila, if there is a fuel leak, because it is within Manila Bay,” Balilo said.
