Spain's meteorological institute AEMET has issued a red alert for the eastern and southern regions of the country due to the predicted heavy rains. The highest level of warning is in effect until Thursday afternoon in some parts of the Valencia region, as well as in parts of the provinces of Málaga and Tarragona, where up to 180 millimeters of rain is expected in 12 hours.
The severe weather warning comes just two weeks after catastrophic floods killed more than 200 people and caused severe damage to many parts of the country. Meteorologists are urging residents of the affected regions to exercise extreme caution as more rainfall could cause additional flooding and damage to infrastructure.
