According to the researchers, New Zealand may experience higher temperatures due to its geographical location and the way global ocean currents move and transfer heat.

New data from Statistics New Zealand show that since 1982, sea surface temperatures have increased by an average of 0.16-0.26°C per decade, and in coastal waters by 0.19-0.34°C per decade.
Compared to the data for the previous 20 years, the rate of ocean surface warming around New Zealand was twice the global average for the decade (0.18°C). In the Chatham Islands region, it was three times higher than the global average.

Meanwhile, New Zealanders will also feel the effects of warming seas, as the ocean determines much of the island nation's weather, said Dr. Georgia Grant, a climate scientist at GNS Science.
"Rising ocean temperatures are one of the factors why storms such as Cyclone Gabrielle are expected to intensify as the climate warms," the expert adds.
