On March 22, Chilean scientists announced that they had discovered a rare species of sea lilies in the Antarctic. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.
Details
The specimen was first spotted during an expedition of the Chilean Antarctic Institute to Vega Island in the Weddell Sea in early January 2024. The recordings were made using robotic underwater equipment.
According to marine biologist Sebastian Menendez, sea lilies use their many arms to move in the water and feed on floating particles.
The species is considered a crinoid, an invertebrate of the Echinodermata type.
