The Russian court has again refused to release the illegally sentenced to 12 years in prison Crimean political prisoner, civilian journalist Amet Suleymanov. The man needs immediate replacement of his heart valve and has serious illnesses, which should be released from punishment. This was reported by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets, UNN reports.

Details

He indicated that the representative of the medical unit of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service believes that "the degree of the prisoner's illness is not severe enough".  At the same time, according to the lawyer, Amet Suleymanov's condition is incompatible with the conditions of detention in the prison in Vladimir.

Over the year, the Crimean Tatar's health has deteriorated significantly. He suffers from constant shortness of breath, lung pain, high blood pressure and swelling of the legs. The man does not receive the necessary treatment. He is not prescribed medications that should support the condition of his heart

- Lubinets said.

In addition, according to the Ombudsman, the court ignored the demand of the defense lawyers to provide the results of the tests necessary to establish a reliable diagnosis. Independent medical institutions recommend that Amet Suleymanov undergo an urgent surgery, otherwise his life is in danger, Lubinets emphasized.

He pointed out that the failure to provide proper medical care to Ukrainian citizens illegally detained in prisons by the Russian Federation is systemic, amounts to torture under the Geneva Convention and violates the inalienable right to life.

The Ombudsman also reported that last year two Crimean political prisoners died in Russian prisons - Dzhemil Gafarov and Konstantin Shiring. They had health problems, but never received any help.

I appeal to the international community and international human rights organizations to use all available levers of influence on the Russian Federation  and respond to the shameful facts of violation of the rights of Ukrainian citizens and demand the release of all illegally detained Ukrainian citizens!

- said the Ombudsman.
