The national police decided to declare a state of civil defense due to the eruption. Prior to that, there had been a level of danger.
Jordis Gudmundsdottir, Director of Public Relations, also said that evacuations are underway in Grindavik.
Bjarki Kaldalons Fries, a natural hazards expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said that the earthquake in the area began around 19:00 local time, with a total of about 80 earthquakes.
