Puerto Rico has declared a public health emergency due to a significant increase in dengue cases - 549 cases have been reported since the beginning of the year, which poses a threat to the island's healthcare system.

Puerto Rico declared a health emergency on Wednesday, March 26, after a significant increase in the number of dengue cases on the island. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Dengue fever infections are common in Puerto Rico, but are not expected until the rainy season begins in the summer. Historically, most dengue cases have occurred between August and December. This year, however, the number of cases has increased during a season when it is not usually seen. Since the beginning of the year, 549 cases have been recorded on the island, and about 62% of those infected had to be hospitalized.

Dr. Iris Cardona, chief medical officer of the Puerto Rico Department of Health, says that if these numbers continue to rise, the island's healthcare system could be at risk.

Authorities on the island have conducted numerous spraying operations to reduce the number of mosquitoes.
