In Russia, the mortality rate among men at large is approximately three times higher than that of prisoners. The cause is excessive alcohol consumption, which reduces life expectancy by 20 years.

Mortality among men in Russia who are at large is approximately three times higher than mortality among prisoners. One of the main reasons for this phenomenon is excessive alcohol consumption. This was reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, UNN reports.

Details

According to the FIS, mortality in Russian places of detention has traditionally been one of the highest in Europe, but even under these conditions, the rates among men outside prisons are significantly worse.

The intelligence service notes that about 70% of all excess male mortality in the Russian Federation is specifically linked to alcohol. Materials for a roundtable meeting of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Social Policy indicate that alcohol reduces the life expectancy of Russian men by an average of 20 years.

As the FIS notes, restrictions on alcohol sales, price increases, and social campaigns have not had the expected effect. At the same time, the full-scale war against Ukraine and the losses associated with it, according to the intelligence service, have only exacerbated the problem.

According to the results of last year, the number of new cases of alcohol dependence in Russia increased for the first time in five years - over 83,000 compared to 63,400 a year earlier. At the same time, the share of rehospitalizations decreased from 27.2% to 16.7%, while the further fate of previously registered patients is not explained by official statistics.

According to the FIS, the most alcohol is consumed in depressed regions of Russia. The Nenets Autonomous Okrug leads with a rate of 18.2 liters of pure alcohol per person per year, followed by the Jewish Autonomous Oblast - 14.76 liters, and Chukotka - 14.17 liters. At the same time, official statistics do not account for the consumption of moonshine and surrogate alcohol.

At the same time, Moscow entered the regions with the lowest official level of alcohol consumption - up to 5 liters of pure alcohol per person per year. The FIS explains this by a greater number of alternative leisure activities and broader spending opportunities in the capital of the Russian Federation.
