From 2014 to 2024, 83 media workers were killed in Ukraine during the Russian-Ukrainian war. This was stated by Kateryna Dyachuk, Head of the Freedom of Speech Monitoring Department at the Institute of Mass Information (IMI), during the opening of the Council of Europe's "Journalists Matter" campaign, UNN reports.
"This number is announced today for the first time. 83 is the number of media workers killed in the 10 years of the Russian-Ukrainian war, that is, since the beginning of 2014," Dyachuk emphasized.
In 2014-2015, seven journalists were killed. Three of them were killed while performing a journalistic assignment, and four were killed as combatants. All of them died in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 76 media workers have reportedly been killed, 10 of them in the course of their professional activities. 66 were killed as combatants or as a result of Russian shelling or torture.
Kateryna also said that all cases of crimes against journalists and media in Ukraine have been verified by the Institute of Mass Information. Over two years and a month of full-scale war, IMI has recorded 575 crimes against journalists and media in Ukraine.
"In recent years, Russian aggression has been the main challenge for the Ukrainian journalistic community and foreign journalists who come to cover the events," she added.
